I volunteered this past week for the fourth annual Middleburg Film Festival in Middleburg, Virginia. This will be my second year volunteering. I always enjoy it. Not only are the films awesome, but the location in Middleburg, Virginia, is gorgeous! I meet some wonderful people and watched some amazing films, especially those with A & Q's afterwards. I viewed CUSTODY staring Catalina Sandino Moreno, who after the show, talked to the audience about her processes in preparing for the film along with Producer Lauren Versel. I watched PATERSON staring Adam Driver, about a bus driver living in Paterson, NJ. I have to tell you, I didn't really understand the director, Jim Jarmusch's vision. The movie was very slow with little action. I know it had something to do with everyday life and being a poet. Many references to Paterson's own famous poet, William Carlos Williams. I found myself looking down at my cellphone, to check the time, way too often. The Washington Post had an article on Paterson, New Jersey today, October 23rd, and described a very interesting and colorful place. Definitely not the vision I saw on film. As with last year, this year had some great films that will definitely be nominated for Oscars such as LOVING, JACKIE, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, LA LA LAND, and LION to name a few. They were all here at the film festival before their public distribution. I would definitely recommend marking this festival on your calendar for next year. Hope to see you there!
